A guitar bridge bushing should be replaced when it can no longer provide a secure, correctly aligned and compatible mounting point for the post or stud. Age, surface discoloration or the fact that a bridge is being upgraded are not sufficient reasons by themselves.
The correct approach is diagnostic: identify whether the movement or damage is actually in the bushing, the post, the bridge, the body hole or another interface, then choose the least invasive reliable repair.

- Retain secure, straight and compatible bushings whenever there is no technical reason to remove them.

Bushing Fundamentals
What Is a Guitar Bridge Bushing?
A bushing, insert or anchor is a metal component installed in the guitar body.
It normally provides an internal thread for a bridge post, tailpiece stud or tremolo pivot stud.
Bushings are used in systems such as:
- Nashville-style Tune-O-Matic bridges
- Stop tailpieces
- Wraparound bridges
- Two-point tremolos
- Double-locking tremolos
- Manufacturer-specific fixed bridges
Traditional ABR-1 bridges are different.
A historically accurate ABR-1 commonly uses slim 6-32 posts threaded directly into the guitar body and therefore has no separate bridge bushings.
Bushing, Post and Stud Are Different Components
These terms should not be used interchangeably.
Bushing or Insert
The component installed in the guitar body.
Post or Stud
The threaded component that enters the bushing and supports the bridge, tailpiece or tremolo.
Upper Post Section
The part of the post that contacts or locates the bridge.
Movement can occur at several different interfaces:
- Between the bushing and guitar body
- Between the post and internal bushing thread
- Between the bridge and upper post section
- Inside a locking mechanism
- Between a thumbwheel and post
The exact source of movement must be identified before any part is replaced.
What Does a Bushing Do?
Depending on the bridge system, the bushing may:
- Anchor the mounting post in the guitar body
- Provide a replaceable internal thread
- Maintain post position
- Support height adjustment
- Transfer mechanical load into the body
- Establish the mounting geometry of the bridge
- Resist movement during playing or tremolo use
Fender describes its two-point tremolo inserts as internally threaded anchors for the bridge pivot screws.
Tune-O-Matic, wraparound and double-locking systems use different insert dimensions and load directions, but all require stable mounting and correct alignment.
Diagnose Before Replacing
When Should Bushings Be Inspected?
Inspect the mounting system when:
- Replacing a bridge
- Replacing posts or studs
- Installing conversion hardware
- The bridge visibly moves
- A post leans or changes position
- Height adjustment feels rough or unstable
- A bushing rises from the guitar body
- A tremolo produces visible post movement
- Threads feel damaged
- The guitar has suffered an impact

Inspection does not mean that removal is required.
Most checks should begin with the bushings still installed.
Replace the Bushing When It Moves in the Body
A press-in bushing should remain secure in its mounting hole during normal use and adjustment.

- Rotates in the body
- Moves sideways
- Rocks in the hole
- Rises during post removal
- Changes position under string or spring load
- Can be lifted or moved by hand
- No longer remains at its intended installation depth
The important distinction is movement between the outer bushing surface and the guitar body.
Play between the bridge and post does not by itself prove that the bushing is loose.
Check Movement at the Correct Interface
To identify the problem:
- Support the guitar securely.
- Reduce string or spring tension where appropriate.
- Observe the bushing while the post is moved gently.
- Check whether the post moves inside the bushing.
- Check whether the complete bushing moves with the post.
- Inspect the bridge-to-post fit separately.
Do not apply excessive sideways pressure.
A loose post thread, worn bridge hole or unlocked bridge can imitate the symptoms of a loose body insert.
Damaged Internal Threads
A bushing may require replacement when its internal thread no longer holds the correct post securely.
Possible signs include:
- The correct post spins without advancing
- The post pulls upward through the thread
- The post repeatedly loosens
- Engagement is rough or intermittent

- Metal particles appear during adjustment

Never Force a Post into a Bushing

- Manufacturer-specific standards
A component that does not engage smoothly by hand should not be forced.
TonePros explicitly warns that metric and US-standard inserts both exist and that parts that do not screw in easily must not be forced.
Replace Only the Damaged Component When Possible
A damaged post does not automatically require a new bushing.
The least invasive reliable repair may be:
- Replacing only the post
- Cleaning compatible internal threads
- Removing dirt or corrosion
- Correcting a damaged locking component
- Replacing the bridge body
- Repairing the body hole
- Replacing both post and bushing
The decision should follow the actual fault rather than treating the complete mounting system as one disposable unit.
Corrosion
Surface discoloration alone is not a reason to remove a bushing.
Replacement becomes more appropriate when corrosion causes:
- Significant material loss
- Deep pitting
- Unreliable thread engagement
- Seized adjustment
- Flaking material inside the thread
- Structural weakening
- Inability to remove or adjust the correct post safely
Decorative aging and functional corrosion are not the same.
A visibly aged insert can remain mechanically sound.
Deformation and Impact Damage
A bushing may be damaged by:
- An impact to the bridge or tremolo
- An oversized or incorrect post
- Angled installation
- Improper extraction
- Excessive installation force
- Movement inside an enlarged body hole
Replace or professionally assess a bushing that is:
- Cracked
- Oval
- Collapsed
- Flared incorrectly
- Unable to support the post vertically
- No longer concentric with its internal thread
Replacing the insert alone may not solve the problem when the surrounding body hole is also damaged.
Incorrect Installation Depth
A bushing should sit at the depth intended by the bridge system.
Possible problems include:
- Insert standing above its intended position
- Insert installed too deeply
- Unequal left and right installation depths
- Tilted insert
- Finish buildup preventing correct seating
- Post bottoming out before the required adjustment is reached
Not every bushing is designed to sit visibly flush with the guitar surface.
Compare the installation with the technical specification for the actual hardware system.
Cracks Around the Bushing
Inspect the surrounding finish and wood separately.
A finish line may be cosmetic.
More serious signs include:
- A crack that opens under load
- Moving wood around the insert
- Chipped or compressed body material
- An enlarged or oval hole
- A failed adhesive repair
- A bushing that changes angle with the surrounding wood
Structural damage requires evaluation of the guitar body before a replacement insert is installed.
Should Bushings Be Replaced During Every Bridge Upgrade?
No.
Retain the existing bushings when they are:
- Secure in the guitar body
- Correctly aligned
- Mechanically undamaged
- Equipped with intact threads
- Compatible with the required posts
- Installed at a suitable depth
- Part of a reversible replacement solution
Unnecessary extraction can damage:
- Guitar finish
- Wood fibers
- Body-hole dimensions
- Original hardware
- Historical value
A different finish, age or material preference alone does not justify removing a stable insert without a defined technical reason.
When Replacement Is Appropriate
Replacement or conversion is appropriate when:

Compatibility-driven replacement is different from repair-driven replacement.
A mechanically healthy insert may still need to be removed when the intended bridge system requires another mounting geometry.
System-Specific Bushings
Tune-O-Matic Bridge Bushings
A traditional Gibson Nashville-style bridge uses body inserts beneath its height-adjustment posts.
These inserts should be assessed for:
- Secure fit in the guitar body
- Correct post thread
- Equal alignment
- Suitable installation depth
- Smooth height adjustment
- Compatibility with the upper post sections
Possible symptoms of a problem include:
- Insert rotating during adjustment
- Insert lifting with the post
- Complete post assembly leaning because the body fit is loose
- Damaged thread
- Bridge unable to seat on both posts
- Visible movement between insert and guitar body
Do not confuse Nashville bridge inserts with the larger inserts used for a stop tailpiece.
They are separate systems with different dimensions and functions.
Traditional ABR-1 Systems
A traditional ABR-1 normally has no bridge bushings to replace.
Its slim posts are threaded directly into the guitar body.
Possible problems in that system include:
- Bent 6-32 post
- Damaged body thread
- Enlarged post hole
- Loose thumbwheel
- Incorrect replacement post
- Previous conversion hardware
Do not describe a direct ABR-1 body-thread repair as a bushing replacement unless an insert or conversion component has actually been installed.
Stop-Tailpiece Bushings
Stop-tailpiece bushings anchor the tailpiece studs.
Inspect them separately from the bridge mounting.
Replacement may be appropriate when:
- The bushing moves in the body
- The stud thread is damaged
- The insert is deformed
- Corrosion prevents adjustment
- The body hole is damaged
- A required replacement stud uses a different incompatible standard
The tailpiece can have visible clearance around its studs while the bushings themselves remain secure.
Movement of the tailpiece on the studs does not automatically indicate loose body inserts.
Wraparound Bridge Bushings
A wraparound bridge combines string anchoring and bridge support.
Its studs and bushings must maintain:
- Bridge position
- Height
- Lateral alignment
- Intonation orientation
- Resistance to forward string pull
Inspect for:
- Stud lean caused by movement in the body
- Oval or enlarged mounting holes
- Insert rotation

Some wraparound systems intentionally have visible clearance before their locking hardware is secured.

Two-Point Tremolo Inserts
Two-point tremolo inserts anchor the pivot screws or studs.
Fender describes its two-point inserts as internally threaded anchors used with specific American, Ultra, American Standard and selected Custom Shop Stratocaster models.
Inspect them for:
- Forward or backward movement
- Rotation in the body
- Rising under spring or string tension
- Damaged internal threads
- Leaning that originates at the body hole
- Cracks around the insert
- Unequal alignment
Tremolo return-to-pitch problems can have many causes.

Do not replace tremolo bushings before the rest of the system has been diagnosed.
Double-Locking Tremolo Bushings
A Floyd Rose Original system is supplied with its own mounting studs and installation hardware.
Matching post spacing alone does not establish insert compatibility.
Also confirm:
- Stud thread
- Insert dimensions
- Stud-head geometry
- Knife-edge geometry
- Installation depth
- Body routing
- Alignment
A worn knife edge or damaged pivot stud can cause instability even when the inserts remain secure.

Conversion Systems
Adapter Posts vs. Replacement Inserts
These are two different conversion approaches.
Adapter or Replacement Posts
These retain the installed bushing and use its existing internal thread.
Advantages may include:
- No insert extraction
- Lower risk to the guitar body
- Easy return to the original hardware
- Faster installation
The adapter must match:
- Existing internal thread
- Required upper post geometry
- Bridge height
- Bridge mounting holes
Replacement Inserts or Conversion Posts
These require removal of the original bushing and installation of a different component into the body hole.
This approach is used when:
- The existing internal thread is unsuitable
- A different upper mounting standard is required
- The conversion design replaces the original insert entirely
- A damaged bushing must be removed
Do not describe these two approaches as equivalent.
KMS Conversion Posts
The KMS ONE 2 uses a precise 6-32 mounting and locking system.
For suitable guitars with pressed-in bridge bushings, KMS Conversion Posts replace the original bridge inserts and establish the required 6-32 upper mounting.
Two versions are available.
KMS Small-Bushing Conversion Post
- Lower press-fit diameter: 7.2 mm
- Lower section length: 14 mm
- Upper thread: 6-32
- Upper threaded height: 14 mm
KMS Large-Bushing Conversion Post
- Lower press-fit diameter: 12.2 mm
- Lower section length: 18.5 mm
- Upper thread: 6-32
- Upper threaded height: 14 mm
The descriptions 7 mm and 12 mm refer to the approximate original body-hole class after the suitable bushings have been removed.
They do not refer to:
- Bridge-post spacing
- Upper post diameter
- Bridge-hole diameter
- Thread size
- String spacing
When KMS Conversion Posts Are Appropriate
Use a KMS Conversion Post only when:
- The existing system uses removable pressed-in bridge bushings.
- The remaining body holes match the selected lower diameter.
- The holes provide sufficient depth.
- The surrounding wood is secure.
- The posts align with the ONE 2 bridge.
- No enlargement or structural repair is required.
The original bushings are not retained beneath the KMS Conversion Posts.
They are removed and replaced by the KMS components.
Reversibility of the KMS Conversion
The KMS conversion is designed to be reversible when:
- The original body holes remain intact.
- The holes are not enlarged.
- The surrounding wood is undamaged.
- No permanent adhesive repair is introduced.
- Removal and installation are performed correctly.
The appropriate KMS installation tool is supplied.
Reversibility does not mean that careless extraction or press-fit installation is risk-free.
Selecting the Correct KMS Version
Do not select the small version solely because the guitar is made in the USA.
Do not select the large version solely because the guitar is an import.
Confirm:
- Actual body-hole diameter
- Hole depth
- Post spacing
- Condition of the wood
- Existing hardware system
Visible bushing-flange diameter alone is not sufficient because the flange can be wider than the section installed in the body.
Measure Without Unnecessary Removal
Before extracting a stable bushing, first use:
- Manufacturer specifications
- Known original hardware identification
- Post-thread measurement
- Technical drawings
- Clear photographs
- Measurements accessible with the insert installed
Remove the bushing only when the intended repair or conversion already requires removal.
Once removed, measure:
- Body-hole diameter
- Hole depth
- Roundness
- Left and right dimensions separately
- Condition of the surrounding wood
A knurled or splined insert can leave impressions that make the hole appear irregular.
The replacement decision must account for the complete fit, not one isolated caliper reading.
Removal and Installation
Removing a Bushing
A pressed-in bushing should be extracted with a controlled tool and a method appropriate to:
- Insert thread
- Bushing geometry
- Guitar finish
- Body material
- Surrounding hardware
- Intended reuse of the original part
A dedicated bushing puller applies extraction force along the insert axis while protecting the guitar surface.
Avoid:
- Pulling with pliers
- Levering against the guitar top
- Striking the post sideways
- Using the bridge as an extraction tool
- Applying uncontrolled heat
- Drilling before the dimensions are known
- Forcing a bolt with an incorrect thread
The correct extraction bolt must match the internal bushing thread.
Protect the Finish Before Extraction
Some instruments were finished after the inserts were installed.
The finish may therefore bridge the edge between bushing and body.
Before extraction, assess:
- Whether lacquer overlaps the insert
- Whether the finish is already cracked
- Whether the insert flange is bonded to the coating
- Whether controlled finish separation is required
- Whether the guitar should be handled by a restoration specialist
A controlled vertical pull does not eliminate the risk of finish chipping.
Vintage, aged and brittle finishes require particular care.
Do Not Remove Bushings with an Improvised Lever
Levering against the guitar body concentrates force into a small surface area.
Possible damage includes:
- Dented guitar top
- Cracked lacquer
- Chipped finish
- Compressed wood
- Tilted insert
- Enlarged body hole
- Damaged surrounding fibers
A dedicated puller or professionally controlled extraction method is preferable.
Inspect the Body Hole After Removal
Before installing a new component, inspect:
- Diameter
- Depth
- Roundness
- Alignment
- Wood condition
- Finish condition
- Previous adhesive
- Loose fibers
- Cracks
- Evidence of enlargement
Measure both mounting holes separately.
Do not assume that they remain identical after years of use or previous repairs.
Installing a New Bushing
A replacement bushing or Conversion Post must be installed:

The visible maximum diameter of a knurled insert is not automatically the correct drill size.
Do not create a body hole from an approximate catalogue diameter without the matching installation specification.
Oversized or Damaged Body Holes
Installing a new bushing of the same nominal size does not repair an enlarged hole automatically.
A loose hole may require:
- Structural wood repair
- Plugging and redrilling
- A purpose-made sleeve
- A correctly engineered oversized insert
- Restoration of the original alignment
The repair must restore:
- Secure fit
- Correct axis
- Correct center spacing
- Suitable depth
- Sufficient surrounding material
Randomly adding adhesive around a loose insert can conceal rather than correct the underlying problem.
Adhesive Is Not a Universal Repair
An adhesive may form part of a planned professional repair, but it should not be treated as the standard installation method for every bushing.
An unsuitable adhesive can cause:

Never Glue the Adjustable Post into the Bushing

A defined thread-retaining product should only be used where a specific manufacturer or repair procedure explicitly requires it.
Alignment and Troubleshooting
Installing Both Bushings as a System
The left and right mounting points must agree in:
- Center spacing
- Axis direction
- Installation depth
- Bridge angle
- Required height range
A bridge should fit without being used to pull the posts together or force them apart.
Before full installation, verify the relationship between:
- Replacement bridge
- Posts
- Bushings or Conversion Posts
- Guitar centerline
- String path
- Scale position
Leaning Posts
A leaning post does not automatically mean that the bushing should be replaced.
Possible causes include:
- Bent post
- Clearance between bridge and post

Observe whether the insert itself changes angle.
Replacing a straight and secure bushing will not correct a bent post.
